Similarities and differences between email and Postal service

Technology has reinvented the way many people do things in everyday life from shopping, to creating and most importantly communication. In the past the only way to communicate back and forth was trough the Postal Service which many now call “snail mail”. Today with the creation of the internet and world wide web communication has never been easier or faster with things like email and text messaging. Email and the postal service have many different aspects that set them apart but still contain some core similarities to each other. Some similarities were used by email to make people more comfortable with using it by making it familiar to the postal service. Email has an inbox called a “mailbox” like the real mailboxes that postal mail uses to sent letters and items to the correct location. The entire process of email is actually very similar to postal mail. When someone sends a letter, it first gets taken to a post office where it is then sorted by address. Once sorted it gets transported to the correct post office, a postal worker then takes the specific address and puts it in the correct mailbox. An email has a similar process. Once sent an email gets sent to a DNS server which then sorts out the intended location based on the IP address. The DNS server then send the email to the proper location which then appears in the recipient’s online mailbox, like with the postal service. Another similarity between the two is that both have a chance of being stolen. Emails can be hacked, and physical mail can be taken. There are some differences that set the two apart however. While email is generally free, postal mail requires shipping costs or stamps because unlike email, there are postal workers who need to be paid. Email also has the potential to fail to be sent, when postal mail will also be sent to a location weather the address is correct or not. with that being said, email is generally way faster. Email takes seconds while postal mail takes days or even weeks to arrive.

What I want out of T INST 207

As an avid user of technology, I think it would be beneficial for me to learn as much as I can about the history, future and concerns about the Devices I devote so much time to. When i'm not doing school work on my laptop, i'm either watching Netflix, browsing social media, playing video games, listening to music or talking to friends online. Even in many classes, power points and videos are a prominently used resource, and that's if i'm not using my laptop to take notes or quizzes online. I honestly believe over seventy five percent of my day is spent looking at some kind of screen, while the other twenty five percent is spend driving, exercising or handwriting papers. I also think this class will be a useful experience for me because, if everything goes as planned, I would like to major in Computer Science. I've taken three years of computer science in high school so I like to think a have a little bit of a head start but either way, knowing about technology would be a good foundation for computer science. Learning common computer vocab is also something that I would like to get out of this class. Things like "TCP/IP", "HTTP", mainframe, "CPU" are all things we have already learned about which is a great start to accomplish that goal. Another very interesting topic would be how technology affects everyday life, society, and government. New advancements are created everyday and that is something I would like to get out of this class as well, current technological events and how they affect the world. If I can get any of the things I mentioned out of this class I will be happy with what I learned.
